It was the fi rst of three historical dr amas t hat Vlá?il made dur ing the Czec h New Wave (tech nically he i sn't really a part of t he N ew Wave, however these films were mad e during the same e ra of artistic freedo m), preceding his more well k nown Marketa Lazarová (1967) and Valley o f the Bees (1968). S et in th e late 16th Century during the Catholic Reformation, in the Mor avian Karst, situated in what is now the Eastern Czech Republic, it tells the tale of a miller (Vítezs lav Vejrazka), and h is son Jan (Vít Olmer), who come under suspicion and are investigate d by a Jesui t priest of th e Inquisitio n (Miroslav Machách ek), when rumors of witchcraft are spread by th e loca l regent (Ce stmír Randa ), who i s jealo us of the miller 's prosp erity and degree of respect amo ng the local populace. As expected from Vlá?il, this film is a stunning e xperience all the way through. From the opening shot, an ominous manipulation of perspect ive w ith a clos e up o f a mangled figure of C hrist dominating the foreground a gainst a ti ny figure in black walking a long the h orizon, to the br eathtaking c onfrontational finale inside the va st stalactite fill ed Karst cave rns, it is a w onderful display of visual mastery. Maybe not quite as impressive as Marketa La zaro vá, but still fu ll of a stonishing imagery. As seen fr om unique angles and distinct points of view which highlight the direc tor 9;s remark able sense of a wareness o f framing, motion, and posi tioni ng on the em otional and dramati c tone of the scene. The most memorable being a repeated shot where the cam era is susp ende d and la unche d with speed through the air toward s the mil ler's door. The story here is a s imple one and I wo uld say mor e access ible than hi s later works. With a convention al structure emphas ized as much b y its pl ot and characte rs, than by its expressionistic cinematography or authenti c historic al detail. The event s play out without much surpris e, and t here is a strong underlyin g, almost supernatural, mysterious aspect that is left unresolved, i n fact barely expl ored, which is slight ly disappointing, but only because it's so fasci natin g that I wi sh there was more. Acting is great all around. Particularly the villains: Miro slav Mach áchek as the priest, cast ing a sinister and impo sing shadow wherever he goes, and Cestmír Randa as the weasel like regent behind all the persecution. While Vít Olmer bri ngs a cha risma tic leading man presence in his role as the miller 9;s son Jan, in love with t he lovely o rphan girl Martina (Karla C hadimová ), who becomes a dangerous object of rivalry between Jan and ot her young m en of the village. The fil m also features the evocative musi c of Zden?k Liška (perhaps t he most prol ific compose r of the Czech New Wave ). In this hi s second of eleven collaborations with Vlá?il, his compositi ons are u sed sparingly, but to great effect , complime nting but never ove rpowering a scene. The best exa mple o f which can be hea rd in an ama zingly shot ce lebration and dance sequence a t the e nd of the se cond act. The Devil& #39;s Trap m ight not be a m asterpiece, b ut it is still a strong effo rt, with a fascinati ng strai ghtforward st ory and a glorious historical setting captured beautif ully by Vlá? il 9;s unmi stakable vi sual prowess . A fine w ork that would also b e the perfect starte r plate to prepare your self fo r the challengi ng feast o f Marketa Lazarová or The Vall ey of the Bees. It even has an easy to digest running time .
