Norma's husband Stephen Lawry is a scientist leaving that night on a tri p to test a secret invention on wh ich he has been w orking for the government and the war effor t. Worrie d abou t Barbara, she uses a prete xt no t to accompa ny Stephen and goes to the apartmen t. Wh en Ba rbara arrives, she finds Paul's dead body and thinks that Norm a has k illed h im, even though Norma insists t hat h e was dea d wh en she arrived. Barbara th reatens to c all the police unless she leav es Ste phen . Fe aring that a scandal will hurt him, Norma agrees. Norma then turns to Mac, who goes to Paul's apartment with Friday and Marty , only to find the body and the rug under it missin g. A man arrives to replace the r ug and Mac hides i n a clos et, overhearing a telephone call to Norma';s number from "Gabriel" to "Vera.&qu ot; Mac accidentally gi ves himself away , but with Fri day's help ov erpowers Gabriel, who refuses to talk. Mac has Marty hid e hi m to keep him under wraps. Norma return s to her count ry home unexpectedly, which discourages an esp ionage ring tha t inclu des her butle r, Hansen, from break ing into Stephen';s safe and stealing his plans. They have killed Gerente, wh o was a lso an agent, and hidden the body. Mac arr ives with Friday at Norma';s house and pretends to be her cu rmudgeonly "Uncle Mac" who ha s come for a visit. H is blindness lulls a ny s uspicions H ansen migh t have ab out him. Shortly thereafter, Barbar a comes home from an "emer gency rehearsal" , called to get her out of the house by he r direct or, Cheli Scott, who inveigles an invitation to spend the night at the L awry home. Unknown to Ba rbara and Nor ma, Cheli is the ringl eade r of the spies. Cheli ord ered Paul ki lled because his affect ion for Bar bara was beginning to limit his eff ectiveness, and she immediately suspects Mac is not what he seem s. Gabriel's wife Ve ra, the Lawrys' ; maid, is also a part of the plot. When Gabriel doe s not return home, V era becomes hy sterical with worry. Mac secretly asks Ve ra to meet him in the greenhouse, usi ng her worry abou t Gabriel as a lure. She is ob served by the othe rs, however, and is killed by Hansen before she can r each Mac. The sp ies cut the house9;s telephone wires so that Mac and Norm a cannot call the police, an d Cheli has Mac locked up under guard. Using h is blindness as a dist raction, Mac overp owers his guard and rele ases Friday out a window with i nstructions to "go home a nd get M arty." Stephen arrives hom e and Cheli threatens his family if he does not give h er the final step in creating his invention, which was not in the safe. Barbara finally realizes how much Norma actu ally cares for her . Mac tries to stall for time, but is locked in the cella r. When Hansen g oes to kil l him, Mac has broken the light bulb and his advantage of total darkness helps him over come the spy. Marty and Friday return with the po lice. W hen Friday i s spot ted by a lookout, Mac o verp owers him and is saved fr om being shot by another lookout by Frid ay.
