Norma9;s husband Stephen L awry is a scientist leavi ng that night on a trip to test a s ecret inv ention on w hich he has been working for th e government an d the war ef fort. Worried about B arbara, sh e uses a p retext no t to a ccompan y Stephen and goes to the apartment. When Bar bara ar rives, she f inds Paul's dead body and thinks that Norma has kille d him, even though N orma insists that he was dead when she arriv ed. Barbara threatens to ca ll the police unless she leaves Ste phen. Fear ing that a scandal will hurt him , Norm a agrees . Norma t hen tu rns to Mac, who goes to Paul's ap artment with Friday and Marty, only to find the body and the rug under it missing. A man arriv es to repl ace the rug and Mac hides in a closet , overhear ing a telephone call to No rma's number fro m "Gabriel" ; to "V era." Mac acc identally gi ves himsel f away, bu t wi th Friday 9;s hel p overpowers G abriel, who refuses to talk. Mac has Marty hide him to keep him under wrap s. Norma r eturns to her cou ntry home un expectedly, which d iscourages an espionage ri ng that include s her butler, Hansen, from breaking into Stephen 's saf e and stealing his plans. They have killed Gerente, who was al so an agent, and h idden the body. M ac arrives with Friday at No rma' s hous e and preten ds to be her curmu dgeonly "Uncle Mac"; who has come for a visit. His blindness lulls any sus picions Hansen might have ab out him. Sho rtly the reafter, Barbara c omes home from an "emergenc y re hearsal&quo t;, called to get her out of the house by her di rect or, Ch eli Scott, who inveigles an invitation to s pend the night at the Lawry home. Unknow n to Barbara and Norma, Cheli is the ringleader of the spies. Che li ordered Paul killed because his affection for Bar bara was beginning to limi t hi s effectiveness, and she immediately suspects Mac is not what he seems. Gabriel';s wife Vera, the Lawrys' maid , is also a part of the plot. When Gabriel doe s not return home, Vera becomes hysterical with worry. Mac secretly a sks Vera to meet him in the greenho use, using her w orry about Gabr iel as a lure. She is observ ed by the others, however, and is killed b y Hansen befor e she ca n reach Ma c. The spies cut the house's te lepho ne wires so that Mac and Norma ca nnot call the police, and Cheli has Mac locked up under guard. Using his b lindness as a distraction, Mac overpo wers his guard and releases Friday out a window with instruct ions to & quot;go hom e and get Marty.&quo t; Stephen arrives home and Cheli threatens his f amily if he does not give her the final step i n creat ing his in vention, wh ich wa s not in the safe. Barb ara finally realizes how mu ch Norma act ually c ares for her . Mac trie s to sta ll for time, but is locked in t he cell ar. When Hansen goes to kill h im, Mac has broken the light bulb and his a dvant age of total dar kness helps him overcome the spy. M arty and Friday return with the pol ice. When Friday is sp otted by a look out, M ac overpowers him and is saved from being shot by another lookout by Friday.
