Bel ievi ng that t he Bentley, with four w heel drive system and a big, powerful engine, can handle thin gs worse tha n a Welsh countrysi de road , James tak es t he car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rally C hampionship, with Kris Meeke behind the wh eel, and James being the co-driver. Challenge: Jeremy attempt s to build a car smaller than the Peel P50, naming his cre ation the P45. It was base d on a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, designed to wrap around the driver. Sin ce it was Hammond& #39;s turn to se lect the challenge locat ion, the team went to the Western Unit ed States. Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA, James cho se the new Asto n Martin Vanquish, and Richard took the S RT Viper. After a brief drive in th e Nev ada de sert, the trio headed to Las Vega s Motor Speedway, specifically the drag strip, to compete in drag r aces organized by th e Las Vegas Pol ice Departm ent; whom organized it with t he theor y that allowing peo ple to drag race, legally, at a closed circ uit, would prevent s treet raci ng. Despite the high performance of their cars, the trio were beaten by mod ified production cars, and 4WD cars, in each o f their dra g races. News: Jer emy comes up with a soluti on on how t o solve the crisis affecting Britain' s town centres: s ackin g all traffic wardens and removing double yellow lines. The trio t hen review a Chinese product desi gned to stop drowsi ness behind the whee l, before they took a first l ook at the 2013 J aguar F-Type. They praise d it s styling, but criticized its high price tag of £60,000 , as well as its target audience. James mentions P eugeot Ci troen's car intend ed to run on compr essed air; Jeremy attem pted to use a fire extinguisher to demonstrate, but faile d after only causin g himself to turn slowly around . When th ey reach Willow Springs, they are force d to play an aerial v ersi on of Laser Quest, wher e they would drive 5 laps around the track, whilst being chased by tw o Aermacchi SF.260 armed with laser gu ns. In the e nd, James won t he chal lenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reason ably Priced Car: Fleetwood Mac's Mic k Fl eetwood drove the Kia Cee&# 39;d ar ound the T est T rack with a lap of 1:45.4. Challe nge, Part 3: Departing Willow Spri ngs, the group hea ded for Los Ang eles, California. In or der to do ";real world" testing, Richard dev ised a challenge to se e who could burn the best el evens. The three instead ende d up dr awing a phallus and left LA. The team th en stayed for a night in Palm Spr ings. How ever, the producers gave t hem a final challenge. The three wou ld dri ve from Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico the follow ing morning, and the last to make i t to the Mexi can border would ha ve to tr avel into the country itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican spor ts c ar made fun of by t he presenters in a n earlier series, for a later segmen t on the show. In revenge for taking them to Ameri ca, Jeremy and Jam es sabotaged Hammond9;s V iper, causi ng him to lose 10 minutes in the race. Despite making a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the fini sh line first, with J ames in s econd. Richard then walked to the borde r being the la st person to arrive. The car s are almo st i denti cal, bu t Jeremy prefers t he Toyot a GT86. The Stig then completed a lap o f the Test Track i n 1:31:3. News: They d iscuss the n ew S ubaru Impreza, which i s not coming to UK, and they then talk about the n ew Maserati Quattrop orte. Chal lenge, Part 1: The producers have reserved a single ticket to a football match at the San Siro in Mila n, Northern It aly. The trio have a ra ce from Wembley Stadium to the San Siro . Jeremy drives the Shelb y Mustang GT500 and R icha rd and James t ravel on public tr anspo rt. Similar to the previous race to Monte C arlo, Ric hard and James are not allowed to us e any cars, and Jeremy is not a llowed to use any trains. According to Jeremy, since the last epic race, th e trains have become f aster and boats have become slo wer. Richard and Ja mes opene d up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurostar, and arrive in Paris while Je remy was sti ll crossing the Engli sh Channe l on a ferry. A fter reaching Fran ce, Jerem y discovers that the Mustang only holds 50 l itres in its f uel tank. After leav ing P aris, Richard an d James discuss wh at to do upon arriving in Milan — as there are t wo of them but only one ticket. Dur ing one of her practice runs, Amy accidentall y destroye d one of the runway lights , which Jeremy gives to her after r evealing the lap time. Challenge, Part 2: The h igh speed TGV sl owed down as it approached the moun tains that s urround North ern Italy. Jerem y began to catch up a nd was nearly neck and neck with the train, until road wor ks at the Mont Blanc Tu nnel slow him do wn. The train st arts to acce lerate again an d reaches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. R ichard and James use a tube net work to get to the streets near the finish line. James maintains his oppo sition to r un on television and Ric hard runs off alo ne to find the finish line, whic h is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Clie quot. J ames then ass embled a bike whic h he had hidden in one of his bags and ride s to the bar, only to fi nd that Richard is al ready there and has won the race and the ticket to the foo tball match. The Stig did laps of e ach car, the Focus being the slowes t at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:2 8.3, and the Megane in 1: 27.7. Jeremy&# 39;s te am w ins. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 February 20 13 James McAvoy Challenge, Par t 1: Jeremy and Richar d attem pt t o de sign a car targe ted at elderly people. Jeremy demonstrates the complexity of modern cars' d shboard. Ri chard brin gs a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy b reaks th e dashboard and re places it considering it to be too complicated for elder s. Richard asks for th e airbags s aying that i t is dan gerous for the elderly who are as delicate as childre n, and that he n eeds i t for a safety feature. Jer emy makes a spee dometer which reads 20 mph at th e top sp eed, he also uses a n ol d design s witch fo r rear fog light whi ch does noth ing. Jeremy install s a pet-cage an d repl aces the back se at with high seat chai rs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige after observing the shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses water-resistant fab ric as seat covers , and while stitching hurt s his eye. They complete the car and end the p art 1 with Rich ard w earing heavy bandages over hi s lef t eye. News: Volkswagen will launch GTI version of the new Golf and GT version of Up w ill be launched. Kia will l aunch the Pro Cee'd GT. The M ini Paceman is la unched, and the trio mock the front end of t he car, c laiming that it looks d epressing. The trio agree that the British are the best drivers. Al fa-Romeo releases photographs of the Gloria, in whi ch the trio make fun of it& #39; s name. R ichard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had attempted to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of ed iting ). R eview : James rev iews the new Range Rover in Lond on. The new car is completely redesigned , 400 kg lig hter due to Aluminium body, has active suspension, new gearb ox, minimalist dashboard and offers bet ter comf ort. James then r aces it ag ainst Terr aMax at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Ne vada . The race was to a hill 10 mile acr oss, passing through rocky terrain, hillock, mud, ri ver and sand-tracks. Ter raMax was switch ed t o drone mode during the race to deflate t he tyres and t ake a s hort-cut. The Range Rover's automatic Terrain Res ponse Syst em is demo nstrat ed. James ta kes a lo nger route to ascend the hill but still wins the race. At the studio, the trio consider the driverles s ca rs to be not ve ry practical. The car has large front bumpers made up of foam, l arge rear-view mirro rs, squeaking ball under the brake- pedal , large magnifyi ng-g lass on the d ashboard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Briers) w ith only four destinatons. The ca r has a n artific ial cat on the roof whi ch later fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Ric hard lat er shows hi s system to find the locatio n of parke d car (the car activates a flare and then relea ses a balloon). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of the Year Show t heme on a loop, whi ch both later find to be irresis tible to clap alon g. The name of the car is revealed to b e The James. They pick up th ree elderly ladies from a pensio ners' home for ro ad-tes ting and drive them to a b owling club where it is shown th at Richard fitted the a irbag at the rear for parking assist which inflates the airbag on close pr oximity. Jer emy a nd Richard b uy food for picnic, choosing only Briti sh foods. They attach th e shopping trolle y to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof o f the ca r leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard e nd up choosing a picnic spot on r oadside where they fin d the trolley to be dama ged during re versing an d the food to be soaked, however they ate the food which was n ot ruined. The next d ay both leave Christch urch and J eremy sho ws his syste m to prevent the car from bei ng d riven on th e wrong side of the road, the car initially sounds alar m and later the tyres, doors a nd other pa rts of the car explode whi ch stops th e car and r enders it immobile. At the studio, James considers the heater to be co mplicated , the trio thank R icha rd Briers an d announce the Africa special. 153 Series 19, Epis ode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest First of the two-e pisode Africa Special, taking place in Africa. The episode was shot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1: Bu y used estat e cars for up to £1,500 in Britain and r eport at a s mall v illage in rural Uganda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Tou ring, Richard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate and James in a Volvo 850R Wag on. The chal lenge is to find th e true sour ce of the river Ni le. They set off an discover that exploring isn';t as di fficult as first thought when they go on a nice easy drive and find Lake Victor ia, of whom the Vict orian Explorers thought was the so urce of th e Nile. Ho wever th ey are t hen told that it is not the actual source of the Ni le and there were tw o othe r disputed loc ations for it, one in Rwanda and one in Bu rundi. However, Jeremy Clar kson insist ed that b oth of t hese lo cations we re w rong and d ecided to head west tow ards Lake Edward to see whe ther there was a lin k between that lake and Lake Ki vu in R wanda. In th eir journe y wes t, where they visit t he E ntebbe Airport and from the re see the Ford Scorpio E state back-up car. They continue into Kampala, Uga nda';s Capital City where they get held u p in a traffic jam overni ght, the m ost hurrendous t raffi c they 'd ever seen . They cont inue on well-mai ntained highways west find ing their trip incredibl y easy before reaching the town of Mbarara in the southwest of the country , via a st op in Jezza, a village in Mpigi District. Here they stay in a disgusting hotel, after driving through tea plantat ions in an attempt to discover a lovely teahous e hotel, which in t he mind o f Richard, was bound to found due to tea pro grammes he'd seen. In Mbarara they stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy h aving a bed wit h faec es on it. Th ey lef t th e hotel disgusted before Richa rd has the idea to ma ke the cars 'hotels'. James modifi es his Vo lvo by adding a library, Richard adds a cooke r and J eremy adds a coff in. The coffin he uses to put his c lothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotto n. They lea ve for Lake Edward, c amping overnight t here because of its b eauty before heading in search of the riv er he ading for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as they al l head east rather than south. They giv e up, leaving them disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the sourc e of the Ni le m ust be on the other side of Lake Vi ctoria. His reasoning is that the Mediterranean Sea is effe ctive ly an inla nd sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather tha n Alex andria in Egypt. After discovering this the y decide that the y must drive straight to t he ot her s ide of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast coast in Tanza nia near the Serenge ti.
