"Countess Scharwenka", a tempera mental customer at Robert a's, turns ou t to be his hometown sweetheart Lizzie Gatz (Ginge r Rog ers). She gets H uck9;s band an engageme nt at the n ightclub wh ere she is a featured entertainer. Two things troub le John. O ne is La dislaw (Victor Var coni), the handsome Russian deposed prince and do orman who seem s too in terested in S tephanie. The other is the memory of So phie (Claire Dodd), the snob bish, conceited girlfriend he left behind after a quarrel over hi s lack of s ophisti cation and p olish. When Aunt M innie die s unexpe ctedly without leaving a will, John inherits the shop. Knowing not hing ab out women's fashion and that his aunt intended for Stephanie to i nherit the busi ness, he persuades Stephanie to remain as his partner. Correspon dents flock to hear what a football p layer has to say about feminine fashions . Huck gives the answers, making a lot of weird statem ents about the innova tions John is planning to intr oduce. Sophie a rrives in Pa ris, attrac ted by John's go od fortune. She enters the sho p, looking for a dress, but is dissati sfied with everythi ng Stephanie shows her. Huck persuades her to choose a gown t hat John had order ed d iscarded as too vulgar. When Jo hn sees her in it, they quarrel for the final time. J ohn reproac hes Step hanie f or selling Sophie the gown. Terri bly hurt, St ephanie quits the shop. With Roberta's putting on a fashion show in a w eek, Huc k takes over the desi gn wo rk, with predictably ba d results. When Stephanie s ees his a wful c reations, she is persuaded to re turn to save Roberta's reputation . The show is a triumph, helped by the ent erta ining of Huck, Coun tess Scharwenka, and the band. When she informs hi m tha t Ladislaw is merely her cou sin an d that the title has been hers since birth, the lovers are reunited.
