At Mac9;s urging, Norma trie d to reason with Pau l, but he insists that he loves Barbara and lau ghs he r of f. Barbara is equally d isdainful o f her and agrees to meet Paul for dinner t hat nigh t at h is apartment. Norma's husband Steph en La wry is a sci entist leaving t hat nigh t on a trip to test a se cret i nvention on which he has b een work ing f or the government and the wa r effort. W orried about Barb ara, she u ses a pretext not to acc ompany Stephen and g oes to the apartment. When Barbara arrive s, she find s Paul's dead bod y and thinks that N orma has kil led him, even though Norma insis ts that h e was dead when she arrived. Barbar a threatens to call the police un less she leave s Stephen. Fearing tha t a scandal will h urt him, Norma agree s. Norma then turns to Mac, w ho g oes to Paul's apartment with Frid ay an d Marty, only to f ind the body and the rug under it missing. A man arrives to replace the rug and Mac hides in a c loset, overhearing a telephone call to Norma's num ber from "Gabriel&qu ot; to "Vera." Mac accidentally g ives hims elf away , but with Friday' s help ove rpowers G abriel, w ho refus es to talk. Ma c has Marty hide him to keep him under wrap s. Norma returns to her country home un expectedly, whic h discourages an espionage ring that inclu des her butler, Hansen, from bre aking in to Stephen's sa fe and s teali ng his plan s. They have ki lled Gerente, who wa s also an agent, and hidden the body. Mac arrives with Friday at N orma's house and preten ds to be her curmudgeonl y "Uncle Mac" who has come for a vi sit. His bl indness lulls any suspicions Han sen might have a bout him. Sho rtly th ereaf ter, Barba ra comes home from a n "eme rgency rehearsal", called to ge t her out of the house by her director, Che li Scott, who inv eigles an i nvitation to spend t he n ight at the Lawr y hom e. Un known to Barba ra and Norm a, Cheli is the ring leader of the spies. Ch eli order ed Paul ki lled because his affection for Barbara was be ginning to limit his effectiveness, and she immediately su spec ts Mac i s not what he see ms. Gabriel's wife Vera, the L awrys' maid, is also a part of the plot . When Gabriel does not return home, Vera becomes hysterical with w orry. Ma c secr etly asks Vera to meet him in the greenhouse, usin g her worry about Gabr iel as a lure. She is observed by the others, however, a nd is killed by Hansen before sh e can reach Mac. The spies cut th e hous e's telephone wir es so that Mac and Norma cannot call th e polic e, and Cheli has Mac loc ked up un der guard. Using his blindn ess as a distr action, Mac overpowers his guard and releases Friday out a window wi th instr uctions to "go home and get Mar ty.&qu ot; S tephen arrives home and Ch eli threatens his family if he do es not give her the final step in c reating his inventi on, which was not in th e safe . Barbara final ly realizes how m uch Norma actually ca res for her . Mac tries to stall fo r time, but is locked in the cellar. When Ha nsen goes to kill him, Mac has broken the light bulb and his advantage of total d arkness h elps him overcome the spy. Marty and Friday return with th e police . When Friday is spotted by a lookout, Mac overpow ers him and is s aved from bei ng shot by an other looko ut by Frid ay.
