Along the way, Mitc h is befri ended by Chris (Val Ki lmer) , anothe r prodigy a few years his senior who t eaches th e Mitch how to loosen up. This could have degener ated into no thin g more than just anot her teen revenge comedy, but there's so much more: the d ialogue is l aced with sharp wit; there are some lo vely scenes that have nothing to do with the story yet are care fully set up, almost as blackouts (e. g., Mitch goes to a lecture at whic h a few studen ts have le ft tape recorder s inst ead of attend ing; later, at a nother lecture there are more t ape re corders than students; and, in a f inal scene, one larg e tape recorder gives the lecture to a room populat ed by n othing but o ther small recorders!); and throw-awa y scenes that make you want to st op and back up the t ape (e.g., Chris off-h andedly c utting a slice off a bar of s olid nitrogen to make a slug for the coffee machine). It 9;s also one of the few movies to boast the presence of the memorabl e Michelle Meye rink -- as Jordan, the "girl -nerd" who made being sma rt and female something to be emulated. And there& #39;s Tears for Fears g reat song, "Ever ybody Wa nts to Rule the World " ; provid ing the perfect coda as the closing credits begin to roll . . . .
