Bel ieving that the Ben tley, with four wheel drive sys tem and a big, powerful engine, can handle things worse than a Welsh countryside r oad, J ames takes the car onto a W elsh stage of the Wo rld Rally Champi onship, wi th Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and Jame s being th e co-driver. Despite t he car hav ing less grip, more weigh t, an electronic handbrake (unsuitable fo r usage on a rally stage) and James no t being proficient at giving p ace notes, the Bentley was actually faster than one of the full WRC cars. Si nce it was Hammond' ;s turn to select the challenge locatio n, the te am went to the Western United Sta tes. Jer emy selec ted the Lexus LF A, James chose th e new Aston Martin Vanquish, and Ri chard took the SR T Viper. After a brief dr ive in the Nevada des ert, the tr io headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, spec ifically the drag strip , to compe te in drag races organized by the Las Vegas Police Depar tment ; whom organized it wit h the theory t hat allowing people to drag race, legally, at a closed circuit, would prevent str eet r acing. Despi te the high perf ormance of thei r car s, the t rio were b eaten by modified production c ars, and 4WD cars, i n each of their drag races. News: Jere my comes up with a solution o n how to sol ve the crisis a ffecting Britain' s town centres: sa cking all traffic wardens and removing double ye llow lines . The trio then review a Chinese product de signed to stop dr owsine ss behind the wheel, befo re they took a first look at the 20 13 Jaguar F-Type. They prai sed its styling, but crit icized its high price tag of £60,0 00, as well as its targe t audience. James ment ions Peugeot Citro en' ;s car intended to run on compres sed air ; Jeremy attempted to u se a fire exting uisher to demonst rate, but fa iled after only cau sing himself to turn slowly arou nd. Challenge, Part 2.: After lea ving Las Vegas, James and Richard make fun of Jere my9;s LFA for lacking not on ly Bluetooth conne ction and iPod connectors, but cup holders, despite being the most expensive car. The y are then ta sked to head to Wil low Springs Inte rnational M otorsports Park, but they inst ead stop on a grooved ro ad, where each c ar drives over the grooves and produces notes. When they reach Willow S prings, they are fo rced to play an aerial version of Las er Quest, where they would drive 5 laps around the track, whilst being ch ased b y two Aermacchi SF .260 arme d with laser gu ns. In the end, James won th e challenge by bei ng hit o nly 17 ti mes. Star i n a Reasonably Price d Car: Fleetw ood Mac's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee 39;d around the Test Tra ck with a lap of 1:45.4. Chal lenge, Part 3: Dep arting Willo w Springs, the group heade d for Lo s Angeles, California. In order to do " real wor ld" testing, Ric hard devi sed a challenge to see who could burn the best elevens. The three instead ended up drawing a phal lus and left LA . The team then stayed for a night in Palm S prings. However, the producers gave th em a fina l challenge. The th ree would drive fro m Palm Springs to the Mexica n border at Calexico the following morning, a nd the last to make it to the M exican border would have to travel int o the count ry itself to drive the Mas tretta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun of by the presen ters in an earlier ser ies, for a later segment on the show. In revenge for taking them to Ame rica, Jeremy and James sab otage d Hammond 9;s Vi per, caus ing him to lo se 10 minutes in the race. Despite ma king a s top for fuel, J eremy made i t to the fin ish line first, with James in secon d. Richa rd then walked to the border b eing the last person to a rriv e. The c ars are almost identical, but Jeremy pref ers the Toyota GT86. The St ig then completed a la p of the Tes t Track in 1: 31:3. News: They discus s the ne w Subaru Impreza, whi ch is not c oming to UK, a nd they then t alk about the new Maserati Qu attroporte. Challenge, Part 1: The producers have re served a sin gle ticket t o a football match a t the San Siro in Mil an, Northe rn Ita ly. Th e trio have a race from Wembl ey Stadium to the San Si ro. Jerem y drives the Shelby Must ang GT500 a nd Richard and James travel on public transpo rt. Similar to the prev ious rac e to Monte Carlo, Rich ard and James are n ot allowed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not allo wed to use any trains. Acc ording to Jeremy, since the last epic ra ce, the trains have become fast er and boats h ave become slower. Richard and James opened up a bi g le ad whilst trave lling on the Eurostar, and arri ve in Paris while Jere my was still crossing the English Channel on a ferry. After reac hing France, Jere my discover s that t he Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fu el tank. After leaving Paris, Richard and James discuss what to do upon a rriving in M ilan — as the re are two of them but only one tic ket. Hun dreds of miles behin d, Jeremy e nds part 1 of the chal lenge stating out loud, "I& #39;m gonna lose!&quo t; Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Amy M acdonald drove the Kia Cee& #39;d around the Test Track in 1: 44.4. During one o f her practi ce runs, Amy accidenta lly destroyed one of the runway lig hts, which Jeremy gives to her afte r revealing the lap time . Challenge, Part 2 : The high speed TGV slowe d down as it a pproached the mountai ns that surr ound No rthern Italy. Jeremy began to c atch up and was nearly neck and neck with the train, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The train s tarts to accele rate again and rea ches Nort hern Italy ahead of Jerem y. Richard a nd James use a tub e network to g et to the stre ets near th e finish line. James mainta ins his opposition to run on telev ision and Richard runs off alone to f ind the finish l ine, whic h is a t a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Cliequot. James then assembl ed a b ike which he had hidde n in one of his bags and ride s to the bar, on ly to find that Ri char d is alr eady there and has w on the rac e and the ticket to the football match . Moments later, Jere my arrived and accepted defeat for the fi rst time ever in an epic race of al l the series. 15 1 Series 19, Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilton Review: Jeremy revi ews t he Vau xhall Ast ra VXR, Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane Ren ault Sp ort Cu p. The Stig did laps of eac h car, the Focus being the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28.3, and the Me gane in 1 :27.7. Richa rd asks for the airbags saying that it is dangerous for the elderly who ar e as deli cate as child ren, and that he needs it for a s afety featu re. Jeremy makes a speedometer which reads 2 0 mph a t the top speed , he also uses an old de sign switch for re ar fog light which does nothing. Je remy installs a pet-cage and rep laces the ba ck seat with high seat c hairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige after observing th e shade of a hearing aid. Ri chard uses water-resis tant fa bric as seat co vers, and while stitch ing hurts his eye. They complete the car and end the part 1 with Ri chard wearin g heavy bandages over his left ey e. News: Volk swagen wil l launch GTI version of the new Golf and GT v ersion of Up will be laun ched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee' d GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and the trio mock the fr ont end of the car , cl aimin g tha t it looks dep ressing. The trio a gree that the Brit ish are th e best drivers. Alfa -Romeo releases ph otographs of the Glor ia, in which the trio make fun of it's name. Rich ard had arrived late so Ja mes and Jeremy had attempted to play te nnis with cars (which has a lot of editin g). Review: James reviews the new Range Rover i n London. The new car is comple tely redesigned, 40 0 kg lighter due to Alum inium b ody, has active suspens ion, new gearbox, minimalist dashboard and offer s bette r comfort. James then races it against TerraMa x at Neva da Aut omotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 10 mile acro ss, pas sing t hrough rocky terr ain, hillock, mud, r iver and sand-tracks. TerraMax was switched to dr one mode during the race to deflate the tyres and take a s hort-cut. The Range Rover's au tomatic Terr ain Re sponse System is demon strated . James takes a longer route to ascend the hill but stil l wins the r ace. At the studio, the tri o consider t he dr iverless cars to be not ver y practical. He d rove over grassy patch in th e last corner but manages to keep the car under c ontrol. Challeng e, Part 2: Jeremy a nd Richa rd road-test their car at Christchurch, Dorset. The c ar has large front bumper s made up of foam, large rear-vi ew mirrors, squeaking ball und er the brake-pedal, large magnifying -glass on the dashboa rd, sat nav ( voiced by Richard Briers) with only four destinaton s. The car has an artificial cat on t he roof which later fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richa rd later sho ws his system to find t he locat ion of parke d car (the car ac tivates a flare and then releases a balloon). Jeremy shows that the ra dio on ly plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, wh ich both later find to be irre sistibl e to clap along. Th e name of the car is re vealed to be The Jame s. They pick up three elderl y ladies from a pensio ners'; hom e for road -test ing and drive th em to a bow ling club wh ere it is show n that Richard fitt ed the airb ag at the rear for parking assist which in flates the airbag on close proximity. Jeremy and Richard buy food for picni c, choosing only B ritish foods. They attach the shopping trol ley to Tow hitch and head for picn ic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jeremy a nd Richard end up choosing a picnic spot on road side wher e they fin d th e trolley to be dama ged d uring rev ersin g an d the food to be soaked, however they ate the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchurch and Jeremy s hows his system to pre vent the car from being driven on th e wrong side of the road, the car initially s ounds alarm and later the t yres, doo rs and other parts of the car expl ode which sto ps the car and renders it immobile . They se t off an discover that expl oring isn& #39;t as di fficult as first tho ught w hen they go on a nice easy d rive and f ind Lake Vi ctoria, of whom the Vi ctorian Ex plorers thought was t he source of the Nil e. Howeve r th ey are th en told that it is not the actual source of the Nile and ther e were two other disput ed locations for it , one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. However, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that both o f these loca tions wer e wrong and decided to head w est towards Lake Edward to see whethe r there wa s a link between that lake and La ke Kivu in Rwan da. In their jo urney w est, w here they visit the Entebbe Airport and from the re s ee the Ford Scorpio Estat e back-up car. They c ontinue in to K ampala, Uganda 's Capit al City wh ere they get held up in a tra ffic jam overnight, t he most hurrendous traffi c they' d eve r seen. Here they stay in a disgustin g hotel, after dr iving t hrough tea plantation s in an attempt to discover a lovely teah ouse hotel, which in the mind of Richard, was bound to found due t o tea progr ammes he';d seen. In Mbarara they stayed in t he Economic Lodge with Jeremy hav ing a bed with f aeces on it. They le ft the hotel di sgusted befor e Richard has the idea to make the cars 'hotels& #39; . James modifies his Vol vo by ad ding a libra ry, R ichard ad ds a cooker and Jerem y adds a coffin. The c offin he uses t o put his clothes in , he sleep s on Egyp tian Cotto n. They leave for Lake Edward, camp ing overnight there because of its be auty before heading in search of the river heading for Lake Ki vu. None of th e rivers connect the lake as they all head east rather tha n south. They give u p, leaving t hem disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the source of the Nile must be on t he other sid e of Lake Vi ctor ia. His reaso ning i s that the Medite rranean Sea is effec tive ly an i nland s ea and so Gibraltar i s the true mouth of the Nile, rather than A lexan dria in Egypt. A fter discovering this they decide th at they must drive s traig ht to the ot her side of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast c oast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
