Agents for the other small nation in the con flict decide to set the ship adrift that same night. Whe n Betsy's father che cks up on th e ship, he is capture d and ti ed u p by the sa boteurs. Betsy hears his cry for help and boards the ship to look for him, just before it is cut loos e. The Navigator drifts out into the Pacific Ocean. The two unwi tting passe ngers eventually find eac h other. A t first, they have g reat diff iculty looki ng after themselves, bu t adapt after a fe w weeks . At one point, they sight a navy ship and ho ist a bright ly-colored flag , not r ealizing it signals that the ship is un der quara ntine. As a result, th e other ve ssel tu rns away. Finally, the ship grounds i tself near an inh abited tropical is land and spri ngs a leak. While Roll o dons a deep sea diving suit and sub merges to patch the hole, th e blac k natives canoe out and take B etsy captive. When Roll o emerges fr om the ocea n, the natives are s cared off, enab ling him t o rescue Betsy and take her back to t he ship . Th e natives re turn and try to board the ship. A fter a fierce stru ggle, Roll o and Betsy try t o escape in a small di nghy. It starts to sink, and the native s swiftly overtake th em in their can oes.
