P aul decides to take her to h is ances tral h ome in the country for s ome peace and quiet, but the superstitious-fil led setting ope ns a Pandora’s Box of terrible occu rrence s. We soon discover that Paul is a real son-of-a-bitch who plans to scare his w ife to dea th, p lanning t o contr ol her fortu ne and continue his secret affair with seductive bad girl Mireille (Si lvia Miró), who happens to be the niece of the tarot c ard-reading hou seke eper, Mabile (L ola Gaos). Paul ’s malevolent scheme works, but he sti ll has t o worry about an additional money -hungry mistress (this guy really gets around !), t he unfor giving Mab ile, as well as ne w fianceé Mireille who might be hidi ng a thing or two herself. More grisly murders follow, a nd the ghost of Marnac returns from hell t o punish t he most desp icable human cha racter in the film. PANIC BEATS was also written by Naschy (unde r his real name Jac into Molina) who injects the film with a n old-fashione d spooky house motif, beefed up with a moder n movie sens e of violen ce and sexualit y. The f ilm offers nothing to o innovative s torywise, and even Nasch y admits on the disc’s extras that it was part ly inspired by GASLIGHT and REBECCA, but he seems to ju st toss in a hodgepodge of e xplo itation an d horror ingredients, while deli vering a stylish and enjoyabl e effort with a number of twists and some gen uinely chill ing mo ments. T he camera shots and lig hting are both effective, and there';s even do es a cool set- up (much lik e what Fred die Francis d id in THE SKULL and THE CREEPING FLESH) w here we se e the point of view of Marnac through h is dark helmet as he stalk s his female prey. Graphically, we are e xposed to ev erythi ng from a plate of bloody eyeballs, to victims being beaten relentlessly with t he vari ous Medi eval weapons affixed on the house’s walls (for example, someone is a xed in the stomac h, fo llowed by t he soaked entrails oozing out!). N aschy ’s most frequen t 1980s leading lady, Jul ia Saly, i s not given much to do, but with her offbeat looks, is a nice pre sence non ethele ss. The prominent female star here is Silvia Miró who is see n in the buff freq uent ly, and she certainly make s fo r some well-appreciated Euro sta rlet eye candy.
