It was the first o f three historical drama s that V lá?i l made dur ing the Czech New Wave (tec hnica lly he isn't really a part of the New W ave, however these films were mad e during the same era of artist ic fre edom), preceding his more well known Marketa Lazarová ( 1967) and Va lley of the Bees (1968). Set in the late 1 6th Century during the Catholic Reformation, in the Moravian Karst, situated i n what is now the East ern Cze ch Republic, it t ells the tale of a mille r (Vítezslav Vejrazka), and his son Jan (V ít O lmer), who come under suspicion and are investigated by a Jesuit priest of the Inquisition (Miroslav Macháchek), when rumors of witchcraft ar e spread by the local regent (C estm ír Randa), who is jealou s of the miller' s prosperit y and degree of resp ect among the local populace. As expected from Vl á?il, this film is a stunn ing exper ience a ll the way thro ugh. F rom t he openi ng shot, a n ominous man ipulation of perspective with a close up of a ma ngled figure of Christ domi nating the fo reground against a ti ny figure in black walking along the horizo n, to the breathtak ing confrontational fina le inside the vast stalactite filled Karst ca verns, it is a wonder ful display of visual mastery. Ma ybe not quite as impressive as Marketa L azarová, but still full of astonish ing imagery. A s seen from unique angles and distinc t po ints of view which highlight the di rector& #39;s remarkable sense of aw areness of fra ming, mot ion, and positi oning on the e motional and dramatic tone of the scene. The most memorable b eing a repeated shot where the c amera is sus pended and l aunched with speed through the air towards the miller 9;s door. The sto ry here is a simple on e and I wo uld say more accessible than his late r wor ks. With a conventiona l st ructure e mphasized as much by its plot and characters, than b y its expressionistic cinematograp hy or authent ic historic al deta il. The events play out without much s urprise, and ther e is a stro ng underlying, a lmost supe rnatu ral, m ysteri ous aspect that is left unresolved, in fa ct barely e xplored, whi ch is slightly disappointing, but only beca use it' s so fascin ating that I wish there was more.< br/> Ac ting is grea t all a round. Particularly the v illains: Miroslav Macháchek as the p riest, cas ting a sini ster and imposing shadow wherever he goes, and Cestm ír Randa as the wease l like regent behind all t he persecution. While Vít Olmer br ings a charismatic leading man prese nce in his role as the miller's son Jan, in lo ve with the lovely orphan girl M artina (Karla Chadimová), wh o beco mes a dange rous object of rivalry between Jan and other young men of the village. The film also fea tures the evocati ve music of Zden?k Liš ka (perhaps the m ost prolific comp oser of the Czech N ew Wave). In this his second of eleven collabora tions with Vlá?il, his comp ositions are used sparingly, but to great effect, complimenting but never overp owering a scene. Th e best exa mple of whi ch c an be hear d in an amazi ngly shot ce lebration and da nce sequenc e at the en d of the second act. T he Devil 's Trap might no t be a masterpiece, b ut it is still a st rong effort , with a fa scina ting strai ghtforward stor y and a glorious historical setting c apture d beautifully by Vlá?il's unmistakable visual prowess. A fine work that would also be the perfect starter plate to prepare yourself for the chal lenging feas t of Marke ta La zarová or The Valle y of the Bees. It even has an easy to digest running time.
