" Count ess Scharwe nka", a temperamental c ustomer at Roberta ' s, turns out to be his hometow n sweethear t Lizzie Gatz (Ging er Rogers). She gets Huck';s band an engagement at the nightc lub where she is a fe ature d entertai ner. Two things trouble John . One is Ladislaw (Victor Varconi), the hand some Russia n deposed princ e and doorman wh o seems too interested in Stephanie . The other is the me mory of S ophie (Claire D odd), the snobbish, conceited girlf riend he left behind after a quarrel over h is lack o f sophistica tion an d polish. When Aunt Minnie d ies unexpectedly without l eaving a will, John inherits t he shop. Knowing nothing about w omen's fashion and t hat his aunt intend ed for Stephan ie to inherit the busi ness, he persuad es Stephanie to re main as his partner. Correspon dents flock to hear w hat a football play er has to say ab out fe minine fashions. Hu ck gives the answe rs, making a lot of weird statements abo ut the innovations John is planni ng to introduce. Sophie ar rives in Par is, attracted by John's good fort une. She en ters the shop, looking for a dress, but is dissatisfied with everything S tephanie shows her. Huck p ersu ades her to choose a gown that John ha d ordered discarded as too vulgar . When John sees he r in it, th ey quarrel for the final time. John repro aches Steph anie for selling Sophie the gown. Terribly hurt, Stephanie quits the shop . Wi th Roberta's puttin g on a fash ion show in a week, Huck takes o ver the design work , with predictab ly bad results. When Stephanie sees his awful creations, she is persua ded to return to save Ro berta' ;s reputation. T he show is a triumph, helpe d by the entert aining of Huck, Countes s Scharwenka, and the band . At the s how, John overhears that she and Ladislaw are leaving Paris and m istakenly assumes that th ey have marr ied. Later, he congratulates her f or bec oming a princess. Wh en she info rms him that Ladislaw is merely her cousin and th at the title has been hers since birth, the lover s are reunited.
