The two unwitting passengers eventually f ind ea ch other. At first , they hav e great difficulty loo king after themselves, but adapt after a few week s. At o ne point, th ey sight a navy sh ip and hoist a brightly- colored flag, not realizing it signals that th e ship is under quar anti ne. As a result, t he other vessel turns away. Fi nally, the s hip grounds itself near an inha bited tro pical island and springs a leak. W hile Rollo dons a deep sea diving suit and submerges to patch the hole, the black natives canoe out and take Betsy captive. W hen Rollo e merges from the ocea n, the natives a re scared off, enablin g him to rescue Betsy and take her back to the ship. Th e na tives r eturn and try to bo ard the ship. After a fierce str uggle, Roll o and Betsy try to escape i n a small d inghy. I t starts to sink, and the nat ives swiftly overtake them in th eir canoes.
