When Min-su pro fess es to havi ng problems wit h his tuition an d financ es, Se -young reass ures him that she will procure the n ecess ary funds fo r him . When the bar's clientele begins to dwindle be cause of Se-young, Ji-suk rep rimands her severely. Se-yo ung de velops a close relationshi p with a Captain Pa k and even allows him to sle ep with her. She asks Captain P ak to find Min-su e mployment on a boat, but when Min-su comes to So kcho for his new j ob, he sees how Se-yo ung has been making her l ivin g. Shocked, he turns his back on the job and leave s. When he eventually retu rns to So kcho , he scathingly den ounces Se-young 's morali ty a nd severs their rela tionship. Decades ago, J i-suk had stumbled int o the ba r business in a desperate effort to support her husband, who wa s serving time in p rison; she lat er left him volun tarily out of shame and m oral degrad ation. Concern ed that Se-youn g wi ll e nd u p with the same fate, Ji-su k asks Min-su t o meet with her. She begs him not to abandon Se-young, bu t he flatly re fuses.
